Beauty and the beast

Based on pictures on the Internet we expected Trinidad to play the part as the beast while Trinidad would be the beauty. After all, Trinidad is known for it´s industry. Tobago, on the other hand, is known for it´s many beautiful beaches. We couldn´t have been more wrong.

After three days in Trinidad we can assure you that the island is beautiful.



Port of Spain is a busy city with cars driving in all directions. Add to the fact that some people drink and drive, there are no crossings, and mobiles are as frequently used as car horns, oh yes, the traffic is chaotic.

A block or two away the scenery is totally different. It´s peaceful. The ocean, green hills, and palm trees bring out the beauty in the island.

The people of Trinidad, at least those we met, are warm and welcoming. Thanks to them we didn´t spend time counting mosquitoes at the guesthouse.

We had hardly got time to get used to the fresh trinidadian air before we found ourselves drinking beer and eating hot rotis on the busiest sidewalk in the city that never sleeps, St. James. Paul & Wendy and Sharia & Curtis showed us how to lime (hang out) like trinidadians do.

With the carnival coming up, they also took us to some local costume factories and pan yards where the bands practiced. It was awesome, and quite crazy to experience over hundred people drumming on the steel drums. Maybe especially fun for Daniel, who got “raped” by an older woman. But as the gentleman he is, he let her do her intimate and erotic moves without a protest.







Nikia gave us a tour to the west, the city centre and maybe the best part; Fort George. From there we had a panorama view over Port of Spain. Thanks to PJ we also got some shoots of the city by night, as an ending to a 10 hours long tour to the south coast.

It was raining heavily in the swamps, so instead of photographing wild animals we were occupied holding a plastic roof over our heads to keep dry. Snakes hanging down from the trees made the boat ride quite wild.







We spent our last evening at Lillians (she is in her 50´s but looks like she could have been 34). She and Ivor cocked enough food to feed the norwegian army. It was the perfect ending to a lovely stay in Trinidad.

Now, we have done the english speaking countries. The next month we are gonna do Mexico, where we will learn spanish. Or at least try to learn some spanish.
