Det aa kome seg dit var verkeleg ei utfordring. Det var toeft, ekstremt og slitsomt. Men det var verdt strevet - til tross for at vi klatra i fire dagar utan ein dusj.
Here´s our diary from the Inca Trail.
Day 1:
We started the hike close to the little town Ollantaytambo, together with 13 other hikers, 19 porters, 3 cooks and 2 guides. While the skinny porters carried our gear, food and tents, we strolled along with a little daypack containing water and snacks.
With 25 kilos each on their backs, the porters ran past us on the way. When we got to camp, they had organized a tent where they served us a three course meal. They even provided us with soap and hot water so we could wash our hands.
Day 2:
Today´s walk was like a living nightmare. The whole hike is 40 kilometers, with 3 high passes to be crossed. One of them reaches the elevation of 4200 meters. Therefore we faced an uphill battle to reach Dead Woman´s Pass.
Sure, the view was fantastic, as we walked through a beautiful green forest. But the mountains where hard to climb. We were sweating and swearing as we tried to catch our much needed breath.
Luckily we made it to the top - after four hours in pain. Good work, guys! Our backs were a mess and our legs were stiff, so the last hour, 700 meters downhill, wasn´t a joy for our knees. Anyway, we got to camp in the end. Completely worn out.
Day 3:
The first couple of hours of today's hike started off like yesterdays. It was terrible. If it wasn´t for Snickers and Kit Kat, who knows if we would have made it to the highest point of the third pass (3700 meters).
The hike was gentle after lunch, and we got to see some fabulous ruins. We camped close to Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young), a short walk from Machu Picchu.
Day 4:
We got up four o´clock in the morning of the final day to watch the sunrise.
Motivated and excited we climbed the last steps to the Sun Gate, where we looked at the peaks surrounding Machu Picchu.
From there we walked down to the site, of course after some compulsory photo shots. Parts of the hike had been tough, but that was forgotten as we stood there in the famous Inca ruin.
Will we ever do the hike again? No way!
Was the hike like a pain in the arse at times? Oh yes!
Do we regret taking part in the adventure? Not at all!
It´s an experience we´ll never forget. Thanks Percy and the rest of our new family!
